Inquiring Minds
For Maggie, Happy Birthday!
It was better not to know.
Paige repeated the phrase in her mind as she eyed the boy’s bathroom door. Angelo and Jono had been holed up in there for over an hour, having first snuck through the Academy chortling maniacally. Normally this wouldn’t have bothered her, but they’d been acting strangely lately. Almost like-
Inside the bathroom something splashed. Angelo gave a quiet shout, which was followed by a string of curses.
It was better not to-
Ah, the hell with it.
Paige crept up to the door and put her ear against it. The heavy oak panel muffled most of the sound and all she could hear was water running faintly. Her face fell. Damn. She turned to leave when she heard Jono moan loudly. Paige’s mouth dropped open and she pressed her ear ever tighter against the door. Much to her disappointment, she heard no other sounds. Still wildly curious, she dropped to her knees and tried to peer into the keyhole, only to find it was covered on the other side.
Inside the bathroom, Jono let out another groan.
::Christ, Ange. That feels so...::
“Heh. It’s a gift.” Angelo’s voice held a note of strained amusement.
::Mmmmmm.::
Paige sat back on her heels, glaring at the door. Unable to contain herself any longer, she leaned forward on her hands and knees and tried to look under it.
“Whatcha doin’?”
Paige jumped. Behind her stood Jubilee, cracking her gum with a mischievous look on her face. “Uhm...I’m..."
“Spying?” Jubilee suggested helpfully.
Paige gave her an indignant look. “I was not spying!” She hissed. “I was...concerned about them. They’ve been in there a while and I heard a loud noise and I was checking to see if someone had fallen!” She groaned inwardly at the how pathetic the excuse sounded.
“Which is why you’re peeking under the door?” Jubilee seemed unconvinced.
“I didn’t want to embarrass them if I was wrong.” Paige stated loftily. She arched her eyebrow, as if was waiting for Jubilee to agree with her faulty logic.
“Oh. Huh.” The younger girl seemed to consider this.
Paige realized that she was holding herself rigidly upright and began to relax. Jubilee wouldn’t tell any-
WHAM! WHAM! WHAMWHAMWHAM! Jubilee pounded her fist against the door. “Hey Ange!” She shouted, “Inquiring minds wanna know what kinda perverted things you’re doin’ in there! Well, Paige’s does, anyway.” She smirked at the blonde girl and took off down the hall.
Paige was watching her go, both horrified and outraged when the door swung open and Angelo appeared, dripping wet and splotchy looking.
But fully clothed, Paige noted.
“Yeah?” He ground out.
“I..Um..er.. I..”
The door opened wider and Jono appeared wrapped in bandages and a towel.
Paige’s eyes became as round as saucers. “What are you DOING in there?”
::We’re dying m’ hair. See?:: Jono pointed at his damp scalp, which did seem to have a more maroon hue to it than usual.
Paige flushed. “Oh, er..I see.”
“Anything else, Country Mouse?” Angelo asked dryly.
“Oh, no, nope. Nothing. Gosh, look at the time, I gotta run, take a test, kill Jubilee. Bye!” Paige scrambled to her feet and launched herself down the hall as fast as she could without running.
“Huh.” Angelo looped his arm over the doorframe and watched Paige scurry around a corner. “Wonder what that was about.”
::Gee. I wonder.:: Jono’s voice held a lightly sarcastic edge as he gave Angelo an amused look.
Ange grinned and leaned over to give him a quick peck on the cheek. Jono snorted and good naturedly shoved Angelo against the doorframe before retreating back into the bathroom. Angelo chuckled and followed him in, shutting the door behind them.
The lock clicked quietly.
